My target 1700 Burpees
I'm fundraising for...
Three in four Australians will experience a mental health challenge by the time they turn 25. Orygen works with young people, their families and friends, to develop new, positive approaches to preventing and treating mental disorders.
It’s been a challenging year for us all, and most of us could probably use some help in bouncing back towards a more positive state of mind.
That’s why this October I'm joining the Burpee Bounce Back Challenge – I'll be helping my own mental health by increasing my physical activity, and helping others by fundraising for mental health research so that young Aussies whose mental health isn’t going great can bounce back too.
Please help me by giving whatever you can. The more people that know about Orygen, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing my page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!

Increased Fundraising Goal
Achieved Fundraising Target
17th day / 1754 burpeesFriday 30th Oct So just finished the last day of the challenge. Feels good to have reached both my fundraising goal and burpees goal. Lots of burpees which has given me more energy and positive outlook every day. I thank everyone who has been so supportive of me and this mental health burpees challenge. I'm not sure if I'll keep the burpees as my daily workout but will try to do some kind of fitness most mornings after seeing how much of an impact it has on my mental state. Peace, Joachim Share
3 days to go!Tuesday 27th Oct I've been out this morning and done my 100 burpees for the day. But for a couple of days where I've been rollerblading instead, this have been my constant start of my day for the last 14 days. Only 3 days to go now! I will hit my target of 1700 burpees...and Melbourne looks like it might be opening a little. It's a good day. Share
Day 7 - mental health and physical activityTuesday 20th Oct It's day 7 and the burpees keep getting done. I have to say I feel much better after starting this challenge. More physical activity plus drinking less = better mental state. Starting each day with this challenge, well after I've had my coffee! has been a life saver in these surreal times. I feel more motivated and positive. Yep, the burpees might hurt, but that's just physical pain and I'll take that any day over the mental pain. Share
I have reached my fundraising goal!Saturday 17th Oct 4th day and my fundraising goal is already reached. I'm so stoked about the support from people. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Share
3rd dayFriday 16th Oct Woke up feeling real tired today with no energy. But once I got to the park and got started the energy improved. Got 100 burpees done plus ended up doing some yoga pushups and Russian twist at the end of the workout. So came back home feeling better than when I went out! Share
1 Day to go!Tuesday 13th Oct Another rainy, grey morning here in Melbourne. But it makes for a quiet, lonesome workout in Carlton Gardens. It always starts with a very slow jog to the park before picking a place to do the burpees. Did a 100 today! Plus I got inspired by a small Tai Chi group to do a bit of my martial art form in between sets. Share
1/2 way there!Saturday 10th Oct I am 1/2 way to reaching my fundraising goal with 4 days still to go before the official challenge starts.
I am overwhelmed by the support, both for the cause and me personally. Shed a quiet tear yesterday when all the donations were coming in. It gives me hope for better days in Melbourne, back to a life full of the good people that make up the community that I love.
All so inspiring to go do those burpees! Share
2nd day of prepWednesday 7th Oct
In training..Monday 5th Oct The official challenge doesn’t start till Oct 14th. But I thought I get started and see how I go just to prep for the official 1st day. Went out in miserable, gray, rainy Melbourne weather just now. It was great, hardly any people around! Getting all of Carlton Gardens to myself is peaceful. Did a very short jog and managed 5x10 burpees. It’s a good start to the day. Now brekky! Share
Lockdown struggleSunday 4th Oct I have dealt with mental health issues for years but the last couple of months has been real tough here in our everlasting lockdown in Melbourne. There has been too much drinking and not much physical activity. I’m hoping through this to raise more awareness of the challenging mental health issues we face (particularly now during so much isolation). And by getting back into good physical shape I hope to get my own mental health back on track. Share
